Feature & Fact

The most well known Bromeliad is the pineapple this and all Bromeliads belong to the family Bromeliaceae with 3000 described species and approximately 56 genies. “Tank” type bromeliads cover Guzmania, Friesea and Tillandsia which we grow these have spiraling leaves in the from of a rosette which act as a water reservoir. The flower stalk of a Friesea is called the “scape” or in the case of a Guzmania the leaf like appendages are called “scape” bracts. Care

Originating form the tropics and sub tropic like South America and places such as Brazil these plants are well known, inexpensive, easy to grow and need little care. Optimum temperatures are around 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and when temperature drop below 18 degrees Celsius it is best to reduce water.Be careful not to over water these plants as the roots do not like to be water logged but ensure the water reservoir “cup” has a small amount of water inside at all times.This plant is able to absorb water through tiny scales on the leaves called “trichomes” which are very affective absorption system.

The humidity levels for a Bromeliad are best kept at 50% but they will with stand more human levels around 50-60% and they are best placed in indirect sun light around 12000-20000 Lux. Bromeliads should also be kept well clear for heating or cooling vents and high air flow areas.Make sure not to water log the pots and fertilize every 3rd to 4th watering with ¼ diluted strength. After fertilizer is applied it is best to rinse the Bromeliad as they do not like mineral build up within the water reservoir.
