Feature & Fact

A Gem, that is the only way to describe this fantastic bulb product which is highly praised by flower enthusiasts around the world. It belongs to the Genus Hyacinthus, which are bulbs formally placed in the lily family Liliaceae but are now classed in the genus of a separate family Hyacinthaceae.

These bulbs are native to the East Mediterranean regions East Iran and Turkmenistan. They are named after the Hyacinth from Greek mythology and are sometimes associated with re-birth.
Hyacinthus has a single dense spike of beautifully fragrant flowers in the shades of Pink, Blue, Red Yellow and White. We only produce the traditional colors of White, Pink and blues as we have found these to be the best performing varieties. As these bulbs are very difficult to grow and produce it is recommend to discard the bulb once flowering is finished as it is very difficult to get the bulb to perform well again next season resulting in a poor display.

Unlike the Dutch who have been cultivating and professionalizing in the bulbs for many years and are very successful in propagation of Hyacinthus and supply of bulbs around the world, however if you wish to attempt to rejuvenate to bulbs for another we have put some tips for you below.

Care

Water your Hyacinthus in the pot regularly around 2-3 times a week. Be sure to keep well clear for heating or cooling vents and high air flow areas. When the flower eventually starts to turn brown remove the blooms but leave the stalk and leaves to die back as this will replenish the bulbs.

It is recommended that a Hyacinthus bulb should be grown in the same place in the ground for around two years before lifting so the best thing to do would be to place it in the garden for this period. Remove the bulb from the soil when ready and put in a cool dry shed to dry off completely and then placed into dry boxes and put away. Plant at the start of the following season around the start of winter in a dark place and water well once and only water lightly again as necessary. For example pot up the bulb and place in the cupboard until you start to see growth then bring them out when you see the “nose” tip of the plant grow out of the pot at around three centimeters tall. If the long process has been a success you should be able to enjoy a good display again. Hyacinthus prefer a well drained soil but one which can retain moister, peat, bark with coco peat should be added to the soil when growing these bulbs. If the plant is not performing use the information above and put yourself in the plants positions. By doing this you will more then likely ascertain the problem.

We hope you enjoy this product and that the background of the plant and information provided has been helpful.
